When gum inflammation appears and is not controlled by yourself or your dentist, the bacteria in the gum area trigger an aggressive inflammatory response from our body, gradually destroying all the tissue around the tooth.
The destruction is so aggressive that the bone supporting the tooth begins to deteriorate. The immune response is so significant that our body’s own cells produce substances that worsen the case.
The onset of this process is almost imperceptible, and you may not notice it. There are two clinical manifestations that indicate the presence of this bone destruction. On one hand, abnormal tooth movement can be detected, and on the other hand, the presence of periodontal pockets.
Periodontal pockets form when the gum gradually detaches from the tooth, leaving a space that serves to accommodate more waste and bacteria.
To measure these periodontal pockets, the periodontist uses a periodontal probe divided into millimeters. This dental examination is called a periodontal examination. The periodontist will note tooth by tooth the depth of your periodontal pockets and record them in your medical history.
The periodontist will determine the best periodic control program to prevent periodontal disease from progressing or worsening.
